Overview

Parsyl is a supply chain data platform that helps shippers, insurers, and their customers monitor the conditions of sensitive and perishable products as they move through the supply chain. Parsyl needed to us to make the experience of monitoring vaccinations for health care workers more intuitive. Using a hardware sensor that monitor temperature information and pushes it to a mobile device, health workers on the ground can have the insights they need to prevent vaccination degradation from occurring.

Problem Definition

There were two distinct phases to this project. The first phase started with a week-long product design sprint to identify improvement areas for their existing Android application. The second phase was dedicated to improving on their web platform experience.

Firstly, we worked on identifying the critical path for several health worker needs:

1. Be able to monitor fridge and vaccine conditions
2. In-situ guidance to help health workers to correct issues
3. Send real-time updates to health worker supervisors

As complex as Parsyl’s monitoring system is, we realized that health care workers needed the opposite approach—they required a simplified experience that communicated critical information in a timely fashion so they could focus on their actual job of administering life-saving vaccines.

Design Process

We had the benefit of multiple customer feedback loops, which we utilized by building a quick prototype to test in the field with health care workers in Senegal. This allowed us to capture their needs and concerns and adjust the mobile app experience accordingly.

Using health worker feedback from the Android app, we started incorporating those new features and improvements over to the web application. In tandem with product updates, we had buy-in from the product and engineering teams to update the dashboard's UI to bring it more in-line with the Android app. Cohesiveness!

Outcome

📈 Growth
Parsyl covers 55% of Senegal’s healthcare supply chain system and has been given the green light to expand.

Learnings

Remote Testing
Training non-designers/researchers to conduct user tests abroad seemed like a dubious venture, but it turned out well. We armed ourselves with a well-written script of questions, defined user flow scenarios, and a system of screen capture and video for future analyzing.

Localization
Due to the global nature of the app, we had UI localization challenges to overcome. Iconography and color theory could help us transcend language barriers.

K.I.S.S.
Healthcare workers needed a detailed guidance experience to help debug issues in the field. They wouldn’t always have access to a supervisor. Video and imagery were more comprehensible at a glance than paragraphs of written instructions.
